Staying Informed Without Getting Swallowed by the Scroll
People are scared right now. If you feel drained or on edge, that makes sense. A lot is happening, and it is coming at us fast.
You do need to stay informed. You need real information to make good choices. But you do not need to live inside the news.
Stay Informed on Purpose
Staying informed means you choose when and how you check updates. Pick set times. Once in the morning and once in the evening is a good start.
Use a Timer
Set a timer before you open an app. Try 10 minutes. When the timer ends, you stop. If the app says you are caught up, take that as your cue to leave.
Choose Your Sources
Pick one or two trusted sources. If you value science, choose sources that use facts. If you value beliefs, that’s fine too. Either way, ask, “How do I know this is true?”
Get Outside Opinions
Don’t stay in one bubble. Add an international source. You don’t have to agree, just get a wider view. “Hate-watch” if you have to.
Stop Doomscrolling
Doomscrolling is endless scrolling that makes you feel worse. To stop, take a breath, stand up, or step outside for a moment.
Be Mindful of Apps
Apps are made to keep your attention. They also collect data. Be mindful of who owns the app and how your data is used. Look up privacy tips and adjust your settings.
Reach Out to People
You can’t handle everything alone. Text a friend. Call a loved one. Check in with your team.
Know Your Strengths
When things feel shaky, list what you have. What skills help you cope? Who do you know who stays calm? Name those strengths.
Your Dollars Have Power
Every time you pay taxes or buy something, your money supports something. Be mindful of what you fund: you can choose to stop buying from companies you do not trust, or support the ones that match your values. If you want to take action with others, know your rights to gather peacefully and show up with your people, whether that is a community meeting, a public event, or a local festival.
A Simple Goal
Stay informed. Use a timer. Pick your sources. Reach out. Then live your life. That’s how we’ll stay steady.
